The University Club Book Fair has been a lot of fun! I met some DC locals who were previously known to me only as email or telephone personalities -- editors at Youth Today and Congressional Quarterly. Nice to finally meet the people behind the email. The best friend of a guy I once dated (circa age 19) showed up at the event! I had no idea he lives in DC and last saw him when I was still experimenting with vintage handbags. That was also a lot of fun -- and it felt wonderful to have so much support.
There will be coverage of the event in a future issue of The Georgetowner.
I enjoyed very much having a chance to meet my readers -- new and established -- and was charmed by the many open-minded characters who regularly attend the Book Fair. Many many thanks also to Judy Guttierez and the organizers of the U Club for making me feel so welcome.

Amy Lazar tells me that The Charlatan yesterday published her story on my book event in the Perspectives section. The Charlatan is the weekly student paper at Carleton University in Ottawa. Look for the article in the NOVEMBER 22 issue, Perspectives section.
This weekend, I'm visiting bookstores in Baltimore. If you live in the area and want to recommend your favorite independent bookstores in Baltimore, please send email to quan@salon.com. Thanks!

O Canada! Earlier today, I commented on the tenacious style of Canadian journalists. I am very enthused about my recent Canadian media tour. Whether we're talking highbrow (CBC Radio One) or classic tabloid (here's a chatty profile in the Toronto Sun) or outlandish reality TV (the Lofters on U8TV) or shock jocks (MOJO Radio) -- my interviewers were all quirky, informed and open-minded. Even when dealing with broad stereotypes to get their point across. Well, Canada is Marshall McLuhan Country, so I'm not surprised.
Toronto: In early November, I did a reading/signing at Cameron House on Queen Street which was sponsored by an organization close to my heart: Maggie's, Toronto Prostitutes Community Project. They still have a few copies of my book for sale -- if you live in Toronto and wish to purchase a copy from Maggie's, call 416-964-0150. Profits will benefit a good cause!
The Maggie's book event was covered by City-TV, part of Moses Znaimer's very groovy media empire.
Ottawa: My next reading was at Collected Works in the West End of Ottawa. CBC Radio One covered the event and I was greeted very warmly by more of those tenacious Canadian reporters. What I admire is the ability to persist with challenging -- and extremely personal -- questions. Not as easy as it sounds!
Look for coverage of the Ottawa event in The Charlatan, this Thursday -- the 22nd, Thanksgiving -- by Amy Lazar.

Recent reviews & news!
The latest review? As far as I know, it's in the Los Angeles Times Book Review Sunday, November 11 by Mark Rozzo. But it's hard to keep up with book reviews. Sometimes a review appears and I find out a month later! So, if you do see a review of my book, don't just assume I know about it. Write and tell me.
On The Critical Eye, Emru Townsend got me talking about stuff I never intended to talk about.... Canadian journalists have a knack for that sort of thing.Tenacious.
And earlier this month, the New York Times ran a smart funny piece by Alex Kuczysnki in the Sunday Styles section: The Sex-Worker Literati. She also interviewed Lily Burana who will appear at a reading with me on Tuesday December 18. Stay tuned.

Welcome! I've returned to blogland. The book launch has been very busy -- though most of the radio, tv and other interviews I did in the early fall kept me in Manhattan. (More about those interviews later and links, too. The next stop on my book tour is Washington, DC, 11/28....
where I'll be signing copies of my book at the University Club's 12th Annual Meet the Authors Night. This book fair is open to the general public and promises to be a blast. It's on Wednesday, November 28 from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m. The University Club is located at 1135 16th Street, NW in DC. If you need more info, call the club at (202) 862-8800. Hope to see you there, if you live/work in the DC region!
Stay tuned for more news of my whereabouts and upcoming media activity. I'll be posting faithfully from now on. If you have a question about a specific city -- or know of a bookstore in your area that needs special attention, please email me: quan@salon.com Thanks!
