Our reading last night was a lot of fun! Thanks to Carla Oliver who managed the event so well, and to our audience. David Sterry is a great MC and I really enjoyed his performance of "Chicken." Veronica Vera did not wear her signature fairy-wings but she did read from her new book "Miss Vera's Cross-Dress for Success" -- coming very very soon. Tune into Sex-TV in Toronto, later this fall, for interviews and coverage...

MOSEX Update
Last night I spent an edifying hour at the Museum of Sex (aka MOSEX) -- their party was a hit! For sheer visual delight, my favorites are the Vargas and Vargaslike drawings, paintings and prints of leggy babes in stockings and heels. But there's much more and I'll have to return, to take in the full range of material. (The Museum opens next week.)

I happened upon Grady Turner who was giving an impromptu lecture on gay porn and "body-building" magazines from the '40s. Fascinating stuff. That famous image of two servicemen in a Passionate Embrace was taken during the Second World War and, as Grady pointed out, we don't know what happened to these guys or who they were: "They may have died on the battlefield." But they became icons of the gay rights movement of the 1990s, and their kiss was popularized from the waist up. At MOSEX, you can see the original in all its glory -- and I suggest that you do.

This week, the NY Times ran a splashy-but-sober piece on MOSEX emphasizing its Educational Appeal. On Wednesday, a Toronto confidante wrote to tell me about "Sex Institutionalized in the City" by The Globe & Mail's Simon Houpt who reports that the Museum is just "seven brief blocks south of the tallest freestanding phallic symbol in the United States." He also reports that Ramses and Trojan condoms originated in New York! They were sold by bootleggers who were being harrassed and fined by the infamous Anthony Comstock.

And, in my mailbox this afternoon: a copy of the Museum's new offering, NYC Sex: How New York Transformed Sex in America. It looks fabulous! Of course, there will be copies at the event on Tuesday -- see my 9/18 entry below!

Fall Events: Show & Tell
Next Tuesday, I'll be speaking on this rather colorful panel. It's an event at the Gershwin Living Room to celebrate the creation of The Museum of Sex. I'm delighted and honored that they've asked me to be part of this... Also on the panel: Martin Duberman who is Distinguished Professor of History at CUNY (City University) and author of a much-praised bio of Paul Robeson. He's also, as I understand it, a sort of elder statesman on the gay history scene. Then, there's Barbara Nitke, erotic photographer, who is suing the pants off John Ashcroft!!! (Sorry couldn't resist.) After the panel, we'll schmooze and/or sign books. Live talk shows are the best! Grady Turner (from the Museum) will host.

Sooooo. Here's what you need to know:

How NYC Transformed Sex in America
It did? Well, that's the idea behind this new collection which comes out in less than two weeks from Scala Publishers: NYC Sex: How New York Transformed Sex in America. Conversations with Annie Sprinkle and Timothy "City of Eros" Gilfoyle are interspersed with important sexual images from New York's past. Other contributors include Martin Duberman, Luc Sante and the late Robert Mapplethorpe. My own contribution is a three-way chat with Xaviera Hollander and Professor Gilfoyle. If you'd like a signed copy, check out these events below and stay tuned!
