Babylonians of (212) ... and 2002

(212) In my mailbox this week: A brand new copy of Sex in New York City by Alison Maddex. Lots of cool pictures of my friends, irreverent commentary -- plus color portrait of yours truly on page 133. It's like flipping through a family scrapbook. There is also quite a bit of New York history -- the "slumming" poster (page 104) and the Bloomies corset (page 56) are among my favorites.

Not to mention a thought-provoking essay by Camille Paglia about The Two Babylons. Given the location of old Babylon, this is timely. No, I don't mean Long Island. I'm talking about a Babylon which stood (and sinned) on a spot we would now call Iraq... Sex in NY City has all the makings of a coffee table book but is small enough to decorate the bedside table in your Manhattan studio apt. It is juuuuust the right size!

2002 It's official! I'm proud to announce that Diary of a Manhattan Call Girl is a winner: Erotic Novel of the Year for 2002! This week I received a very smart-looking lucite plaque from the Erotic Authors Association courtesy of Marilyn Jaye Lewis.

Welcome To Oh-Three!
This Sunday, my review of Bare by Elisabeth Eaves appeared in the LA Times Book Review -- click here to read The contortionist dance of a peep show worker which takes a look at an exotic dancer memoir set in the Pacific Northwest.

Caught Lying?
On Friday, Yediot Aharanot (the popular Israeli daily) ran a feature about Diary -- "I am lying and writing" by Max Levitte -- in the Weekend Magazine with lots of fun pictures by Jonothan Torgovnik. I can't understand a word of what they're saying about me because I don't read or speak Hebrew but it looks fairly non-incriminating. Despite the title. You see, "lying (shochvet) is a pun that also means having sex," according to one Hebrew-speaking source. So... Lying in a good way.

The Hebrew translation of Diary was published last month by Modan and can be purchased online from Booknet: http://www.booknet.co.il

The Navel to the North
The Winter issue of Digital Journal.com is in bookstores across Canada. Well, judging by the reader mail, it's getting very good distribution in Ontario and Quebec. My contribution -- Is It Sexy To Be Canadian? -- has annoyed some readers, like the guy from Montreal who thinks Toronto is lame and finds there is nothing sexy in a parliamentary debate. Others are saying things like "Firmly in your corner" -- thanks, Tony!! -- and telling me that I got it right. Admittedly there is no correct answer to this quandary -- which is why I chose to write about it, of course.
