December 17 Everywhere

People are writing to ask about December 17 which was chosen as the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers. This was conceived by the Sex Workers Outreach Project in Oakland, California shortly after the Green River Killer was captured.

Their idea caught on in various cities and countries. The sex workers in Montreal have written to the new Prime Minister of Canada, Paul Martin, inviting him to their vigil. There's also an event in Taipei.

You can read about the events and the issues here:

Thanks to web guru Cynthia Connors for creating this page for the New York event:

And here's an event I just heard about which did not yet make it onto the SWOP site:

London, England:

11 a.m. on WEDNESDAY 17TH DECEMBER 2003
ATTORNEY GENERAL’S CHAMBERS
9 BUCKINGHAM GATE
LONDON SW1E 6JP

Members of the GMB will delivery a letter to Rt Hon Harriet Harman QC MP,
Solicitor General. http://www.gmbunion.org/

Vancouver, Canada:

There is also a memorial in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery at 5:30 sponsored by SWAV but I cannot find the address or any other details.

I will post more info as I get it! I realize this is a depressing subject and frankly I don't like to dwell on the violence in this world. It's horrible. But it's also a reality which must be addressed. If you're interested in this problem-- violence against sex trade workers -- check out these links.
